Nuzhat al-Nazar fi Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikar - Tahqiq al-QasimIbn Hajar Al-Asqalani

Abu ʿAli al-Baradani (1)—one of his shaykhs—one hadith, which he subsequently related on his authority; Abu ʿAli died in 500 AH. Then (2) the last of al-Salafī’s companions to receive an audition from him (3) was his grandson, Abu al-Qasim ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Makkī (4), whose death occurred in 650 AH.

An earlier instance of this phenomenon is that al-Bukhari narrated, in his History and elsewhere (6), several items from his pupil Abu al-ʿAbbas al-Sarraj (5). Al-Sarraj died in 256 AH (7), and the final person to transmit from him through direct audition was Abu al-Husayn al-Khaffaf (8), who died in 393 AH.

In most such cases (9), the material that was heard from a shaykh is not passed on until much later.

(1) In manuscript K the nisba is written “al-Baradhani” (with the dotted dh). The person meant is the hadith master Abu Ali Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Bardani al-Baghdadi; see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, 19:219. Al-Samʿani notes in al-Ansab, 2:144, that the word is pronounced with a short a after the letters b, r, and d and ends with n; it derives from Bardan, a village near Baghdad. (2) In manuscript J the text reads “wa-kana” instead of “thumma kana.” (3) Manuscript K vocalizes the word as “akhir(u)” with the nominative ending, whereas manuscripts A, B, and Z support the form adopted in the printed text. (4) The individual referred to is the transmitter Abu al-Qasim ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-Hasib Makki b. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Tarabulusi al-Iskandarani; see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, 23:278. (5) The person is Abu al-ʿAbbas Muhammad b. Ishaq b. Ibrahim al-Sarraj al-Thaqafi al-Khurasani, a hadith master who died in 213 AH; see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, 14:388. (6) The words “wa-ghayrihi” (and others) are absent from manuscript B. (7) Manuscript A reads “mata” without the prefixed conjunction waw. (8) The name refers to the hadith scholar Abu al-Husayn Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Naysaburi al-Khuffaf; see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, 16:481. (9) The preposition “min” is missing in manuscript D.
