The benefit of this knowledge is that it allows one to distinguish the various ranks of the narrators and to accord each person his proper station.
Al-Khatib composed a work entitled “Fathers Narrating from Sons” (1), and he wrote a brief monograph (2) on “Companions Narrating from Followers” (3).
The later hadith master Salah al-Din al-ʿAlāʾī (4) compiled a large volume dealing with those who report “from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet ﷺ.” He arranged it into sections, among them cases in which the pronoun in the phrase “from his grandfather” refers back to—
(1) Manuscript K inserts the word “wafiran” (abundant). Al-Khatib cites this in Tarikh Baghdad, 3:97, and in al-Asma al-Mubhama, p. 151.
(2) In K the reading is “wa juzan” (and a part) instead of “wa afrada juzan” (and he singled out a separate part).
(3) Al-Zarkashi notes in al-Nukat, 1:67: “Al-Khatib authored a book on this subject, and their number comes to roughly twenty.” See also al-Iraqi, Taqyid wa Idah, p. 76. In manuscript Y the clause “wa-minhu man rawa ʿan abihi ʿan jaddihi” appears here instead.
(4) The scholar referred to is Salah al-Din Abu Saʿid Khalil b. Kikeldi b. Abd Allah al-Alai, the hadith master (d. 761 AH). See al-Dhahabi, Muʿjam al-Shuyukh, 1:223, and al-Husayni, Dhayl al-Tadhkira, p. 28.
