and scholars have also compiled works on the category of al-wuḥdān (1): this denotes a narrator from whom only (2) a single person relates— even if that narrator is explicitly named (3). Among those who assembled such lists are Muslim (4), al-Hasan ibn Sufyān (5), and others (6).
Alternatively, the transmitter may choose not to mention his teacher’s name for the sake of brevity, saying, for example: “So-and-so informed me,” “a shaykh,” “a man,” “one of them,” or “the son of so-and-so.”
[Al-Mubhamāt]
The identity of an unnamed narrator can often be discovered when the same report appears through another chain in which he is clearly named (7). Scholars have therefore authored separate treatises on this topic entitled al-Mubhamāt (8).
(1) MS J has al-wuhdānu (with the nominative ending); MS T reads al-wahdān, with an open wāw; the reading adopted here follows B, D, H, Z, and Ḥ. ʿAli al-Qari states in Sharh Sharh al-Nukhba (p. 509): “It is pronounced with a ḍamma on the wāw and a sukūn on the h, and it is the plural of al-wāḥid (single).”
(2) MS H inserts the word rawī (narrator).
(3) MS T reads yusammā (is called).
(4) In his book al-Munfaridāt wa-l-Wuhdān, which is in print.
(5) In his book al-Wuhdān min Asmāʾ al-Ṣaḥāba. The author is al-Hasan b. Sufyān b. ʿĀmir al-Nīsābūrī, compiler of the Musnad (d. 303 AH); see Ibn Abī Ḥātim, al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl 3/16; al-Dhahabī, Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ 14/157.
(6) Among others: al-Nasāʾī in his Tasmiyat man lam yarwi ʿanhu ghayr rajul wāḥid (in print), and Abū l-Fatḥ al-Azdī in al-Makhzūn fī ʿIlm al-Ḥadīth (also in print).
(7) MS K reads ākhar (another).
