Nuzhat al-Nazar fi Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikar - Tahqiq al-QasimIbn Hajar Al-Asqalani

by ʿAbd al-Ghanī (1) and, after him, al-Ṣūrī (2).

One example of this confusion is the case of Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib ibn Bishr al-Kalbī: some ascribed him to his grandfather and called him “Muḥammad ibn Bishr,” others recorded his name as Ḥammād (3) ibn al-Sāʾib, some referred to him by the teknonym Abū al-Naḍr (4), others as Abū Saʿīd, and yet others as Abū (5) Hishām (6). People therefore assumed these names belonged to several transmitters, when in fact they all point to a single individual. Anyone unaware of the underlying reality will understand nothing of the matter.

The second cause is that the narrator may have transmitted only a few hadiths, so very little is taken from him (10).

(1) MS K adds the words: “b. Saʿid al-Misri, who is al-Azdi.” In the margin someone wrote “Idah” (clarification) and corrected the text accordingly. The same phrase appears in MS D, with the word “margin” written above it. The person meant is ʿAbd al-Ghani b. Saʿid b. ʿAli al-Azdi, the hadith master (d. 409 AH). See: Ibn ʿAsakir, Tarikh Dimashq 36/395; al-Dhahabi, Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ 17/268. His book is entitled Idah al-Ishkal fi al-Ruwat (Clarifying Difficult Points concerning Narrators), cited by Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili, al-Mizzi, and al-ʿIraqi; cf. Ibn Khayr, Fahrist, p. 187; al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-Kamal 5/433; al-ʿIraqi, Sharh al-Tabsira wa-l-Tadhkira 2/198. (2) He is Abu ʿAbd Allah Muhammad b. ʿAli b. ʿAbd Allah al-Suri, the hadith master (d. 441 AH); see Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ 17/627. A number of scholars quoted from his book, among them al-Khatib in several works and Ibn Makula in al-Ikmal. (3) MS D reads “Hammad” in the nominative; the adopted reading follows MS K. (4) MS A has “al-Nasr.” (5) Here the lacuna in MS L comes to an end. (6) MS J reads “Aba Hashim.” (7) MS L has “fa-hadha.” (8) MS A reads “al-haqiqa.” (9) The preposition min is missing in MS D, and the phrase shayʾan min is absent in MS Y. (10) MS J reads “minhu.”
