Nuzhat al-Nazar fi Tawdih Nukhbat al-Fikar - Tahqiq al-QasimIbn Hajar Al-Asqalani

the names—for instance, Murrah ibn Kaʿb and Kaʿb ibn Murrah, because one of them carries his companion’s father’s (1) name. This (2) is what is called the inverted report. Al-Khatib authored a book (3) on the subject entitled Rafiʿ (4) al-Irtiyab (5).

Reversal can (6) take place in the wording of the matn as well. An example is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah recorded by Muslim (7) concerning the seven whom Allah will shade beneath His Throne (8). It contains the phrase: “and a man who gives charity so secretly that his right hand does not know what his left hand spends.” This (9) is an inversion that slipped in through one of the transmitters; the correct wording is: “so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends,” as found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (10).

(1) In manuscripts B, C, H, W, and Z the reading is: “abi.” (2) Manuscript C has: “wa-hadha” (and this). (3) Manuscript H adds the word: “yusamma” (is called). (4) Manuscript H reads “Rafiʿu” (nominative) and notes above it: “nuskhah” (copy); the adopted text follows C and D. (5) The work is entitled Rafiʿ al-irtiyab fi l-maqlub min al-asma wa l-ansab; this is the title the author himself gives in Muwdih Awham al-Jamʿ wa l-Tafriq (1:78) and al-Asma al-Mubhama fi l-Anbaʾ al-Muhkama (1:9). (6) Manuscript W reads “yaqaʿ,” spelled with the letters ya and ta. (7) Listed under no. 1031. (8) Manuscripts D, Z, and K insert “zill” (shade); a marginal note on K has “tahta zill” (under the shade). (9) Manuscript B reads “ʿala ma” in place of “mimma.” (10) Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 660. The correct wording does not appear in Sahih Muslim. Qadi ʿIyad states in al-Mashariq (2:254): “All copies of Muslim read thus, but it is inverted; the correct order places the left side first, as found in the Muwattaʾ, Bukhari, and the other sources. The inversion is the mistake of those who transmitted from Muslim, as shown by his correlating it with Malik’s report.” See also: Sahih al-Bukhari (660); the Muwattaʾ, Laythi recension (1709); and al-Nawawi’s commentary on Muslim (7:122). The author remarks in Fath al-Bari (2:146): “The error is neither from those below Muslim nor from Muslim himself; it originates with his teacher, or his teacher’s teacher, Yahya al-Qattan.” In the margin of manuscript A, in the author’s own hand, it says: “Then it likewise reached [me].”
