Al-Radd al-MufhimNasir al-Din al-Albani

3 – This likewise accords with the narration transmitted by Abū al-Shaʿthāʾ (1): that Ibn ʿAbbās said, “She should draw her jilbāb down toward her face, but she is not to cover it with it.”

(1) I note that his full name is Jabir ibn Zayd al-Basri, a reliable and eminent Successor (tabi‘i). Al-Dhahabi states in Siyar (4/482): “He was one of the leading pupils of Ibn Abbas.” It is authentically reported from Ibn Abbas that he said, “Had the people of Basra deferred to Jabir ibn Zayd’s opinion, they would have been granted knowledge surpassing what is in the Book of Allah.” Abu Nuaym records this (3/85) and others transmit it with a sound chain. Abu Nuaym also narrates (3/89) with a good chain from Hind bint al-Muhallab: “Jabir ibn Zayd was the most devoted person to me and to my mother … and he used to instruct me to lift the khimar (head-covering),” whereupon she placed her hand on her forehead.
