- The strictest among the dissenters on the question of women—foremost among them Ḥamūd al-Tuwajirī, may Allah preserve him—insist that the verb yudnīna in the verse means “they must cover their faces.” Yet this contradicts the root meaning of the word idnāʾ in Arabic, namely “to bring near,” as I have already pointed out and explained in the book (1)—and as will be further detailed in its proper place. I showed there that the verse is not an explicit proof for veiling the face, and that the burden lies with the opponents to supply evidence that tips the scale in favor of their view; this they have not done, nor will they be able to do, except by attacking those who disagree with them—people who follow the early generations of the ummah, along with their exegetes and scholars. Here is Imām al-Rāghib al-Aṣfahānī, for instance, who states in his Mufradāt: (d-n-w) dunū means “nearness”… One may say dānaytu bayna al-amrayn and adnaytu aḥadahumā—“I drew the two matters close together,” or “I brought one of them near.”
(1) When the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—says “the Introduction,” he is referring to the introduction of Jilbab al-marʾah al-muslimah (The Muslim Woman’s Jilbab); when he says “the Book,” he means the work al-Jilbab itself. Keep this distinction in mind. —Publisher
