Al-Radd al-MufhimNasir al-Din al-Albani
  1. Among the lexicographers is al-Rāghib al-Aṣfahānī (d. 502 AH). In his unique work Al-Mufradāt fī Gharīb al-Qurʾān (p. 159) he writes:
“Khamr (to cover): the root meaning of khamr is to conceal something. Whatever is used for concealment is called a khimār. Yet by common usage the khimār has come to denote what a woman covers her head with; its plural is khumur. The Exalted said: ‘and let them draw their khumur over their bosoms’ (Qur’an 24:31).”
Ibn Manẓūr (d. 711 AH), al-Fayrūzābādī (d. 816 AH), and the group of scholars who compiled Al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ—as cited earlier—have all stated plainly that it is a head-covering.
Because of these quotations from such towering authorities, the respected Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn found himself unable to follow Shaykh al-Tuwijrī in his partisan view and instead agreed with those imams, saying in his treatise (p. 6):
“The khimār: that with which a woman veils and covers her head, like the ghudfah.” (1)
I say: On the strength of this evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah, and from the statements of the leading scholars of exegesis, ḥadith, jurisprudence, and language, our view is established: the khimār is a head-covering. Thus the claim of Shaykh al-Tuwijrī and his followers—such as Ibn Khalaf, who asserted (p. 70 of Nadhrāt) that the khimār is, linguistically and legally, a general term for both head and face—is rendered void. Unfortunately, our esteemed brother Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Iskandarānī was taken in by this and reproduced it in his book ʿAwdat al-Ḥijāb (3/285).
(1) I note that the word is spelled with the letter fa; in the edition of “al-Rasail” it appeared with a qaf, which confused some readers who could not identify it. Lisan al-Arab states: “al-ghadfa (with the first syllable pronounced with a u-vowel) is a kind of veil worn by Arab women.” [22]
