Fourth example: Jābir narrated—sound: “The Prophet ﷺ came to a woman from the Anṣār. She laid a mat for him beside a ṣūr—that is, a cluster of date-palms—sprinkled water around it, slaughtered a sheep and prepared food for him. He ate, and we ate with him. He then performed ablution for the Ẓuhr prayer and prayed. The woman said, ‘Messenger of Allah, we still have some meat left from our sheep; would you like to have supper?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ So he ate and we ate, then he prayed the ʿAṣr prayer without renewing his ablution.”
It was recorded by Abū Yaʿlā in his Musnad (4/116/2160) and by al-Ṭaḥāwī in Sharḥ al-Maʿānī (1/39) through the chain of Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir from Jābir.
I say: its chain of transmission is sound.
Al-Ḥumaydī also related it in his Musnad (533/1266) through ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, who heard it from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh in a version that is more complete; the additional wording comes from him.
I say: this chain is good, and through the same route Aḥmad likewise recorded it (3/374–375) with similar wording but without the extra material.
Note: The annotator of Abū Yaʿlā’s Musnad has expanded the documentation of this ḥadith in an unwarranted way, citing ʿAbd al-Razzaq, the compilers of the Sunan, Ibn Ḥibbān, and others, giving the impression that they all transmit it in the full form found in Abū Yaʿlā. That is not the case. What they report is merely: he ate the first time, performed ablution, and prayed Ẓuhr; he ate again, then prayed ʿAṣr without ablution. It is also listed in Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd (186). ⦗151⦘
