- At times, certain individuals went so far as to tamper with the chain of transmission, substituting one narrator for another to make the report appear stronger. They would delete from the wording of the hadith—or from the scholar’s statement—whatever stood as evidence against them, and then cite that very narration as proof or corroboration, even though it actually refutes their position.
