- Those who maintain that a woman is obliged to cover her face and hands possess no explicit proof for this—neither from the Qur’an, nor from the Sunnah, nor from scholarly consensus. Indeed, they do not have a single authentic and unequivocal report from the early generations that must be followed. All they can cite are a few general or unrestricted texts whose scope has been clarified by the Sunnah and whose literal breadth has never been applied by the ummah. Consequently, some scholars exempted the face and the hands, others exempted half the face, some left the eyes uncovered, and a few allowed only one eye to show; of these, the first group is the most in harmony with the Qur’an and the Sunnah.
