- As for Qatadah, he said in his commentary on the verse, “Let them draw over themselves their outer garments” (Q 33:59): “Allah has bound them to pull them down over the eyebrows.”
In other words, they are to fasten their jilbabs (outer cloaks) over their foreheads, not over their faces, exactly as Imam Ibn Jarir explained—a point that has already been clarified.
I therefore state: these facts about the hadith have been ignored by those shaykhs and their imitators. In consequence, they have, on the level of derivative rulings, opposed the vast majority of scholars—early and later—who based their words and deeds on the explicit text of the hadith. More fundamentally, they have contradicted the hadith scholars in their principle of corroborating a report through multiple chains and supporting narrations. This very principle is the source from which many traditions without a fully sound chain still gain strength. Anyone ignorant of this rule, of the various routes of transmission, and of the corroborative reports will inevitably fall into the same mistake these critics made when they declared this authentic hadith weak.
