and merge it with their ʿUmrah, thereby becoming qārinahs (pilgrims combining ʿUmrah and Hajj).
The evidence for this is the report that “ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—began menstruating after she had already entered ihrām for ʿUmrah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in and found her weeping. He said, ‘What is making you cry? Have you started menstruating?’ She replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘This is something Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Do everything a pilgrim does except that you must not circumambulate the House.’” (1)
In the agreed-upon narration of Jābir it is stated: “The Prophet ﷺ then entered upon ʿĀʾishah and found her weeping. He asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’ She said, ‘The matter is that I have menstruated; the people have exited from ihrām while I have not exited and I have not circumambulated the House, and the people are now setting out for Hajj.’ He replied, ‘This is a matter Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. Perform ghusl, then pronounce your intention.’ She did so and attended all the stations. When she became pure she performed ṭawāf around the Kaʿbah and the saʿy between Safā and Marwah, whereupon he said, ‘You have now exited from both your Hajj and your ʿUmrah together.’” End of narration.
Al-ʿAllāmah Ibn al-Qayyim said in Tahdhīb al-Sunan (2/303): “The authentic reports plainly show that she first assumed ihrām for ʿUmrah, and when she menstruated the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed her to enter ihrām for Hajj, thus making her a qārinah (one performing qirān). For that reason the Prophet ﷺ told her, ‘Your circumambulation of the House and your saʿy between Safā and Marwah will suffice for both your Hajj and your ʿUmrah.’” End quote.
