provided that he does all that is within his power to deal justly with his wives. He further obliged husbands to treat them kindly, saying, “And live with them in kindness” (Qur’an 4:19). (1) He made the bridal gift (mahr) the exclusive right of the woman and commanded that it be paid to her in full, unless she willingly remits some portion of it: “Give women their bridal gifts graciously; but if they of their own accord remit any part of it to you, then enjoy it as something wholesome and pleasant” (Qur’an 4:4). (2) Allah also appointed her a guardian within her husband’s household—empowering her to command and forbid there and making her sovereign over her children. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The woman is a shepherd in her husband’s home and is responsible for her flock.” The husband, moreover, is required to provide her maintenance and clothing in a manner that is customary and fair.
[What the enemies of Islam desire for women]
3 – What the enemies of Islam and their offshoots seek today in stripping women of their dignity and wrenching away their rights: The enemies of Islam—in fact, the enemies of humanity today, whether unbelievers, hypocrites, or those in whose hearts is a disease—are enraged by the honor, pride, and protection the Muslim woman enjoys under Islam. These enemies want the woman to become an instrument of destruction, a snare with which they hunt down those weak in faith and slaves to unbridled lust, after they themselves have sated their ravenous appetites with her. Allah, Exalted is He, has said: “Those who follow their passions want you to deviate far away” (Qur’an 4:27).
