And Allah, the Exalted, also says: “When the girl who was buried alive is asked—for what offense was she slain?” (Qur’an 81:8–9) (1). The mawʾūdah is a daughter who would be interred alive until she perished beneath the earth. Should she escape that fate and remain alive, she would still lead a life of degradation: she had no entitlement to inherit from a relative, no matter how great his wealth, nor was her poverty or need taken into account, for they reserved inheritance exclusively for males. Indeed, a woman herself could be passed on to her late husband’s heirs just as his property was. Moreover, a large number of women might live under the authority of a single husband, for they imposed no limit on the number of wives a man could take, indifferent to the hardship, embarrassment, and injustice that befell them as a result.
[The Status of Women in Islam]
2 – The Status of Women in Islam: When Islam arrived, it abolished these injustices against women and restored to her her rightful place within humanity. Allah, Exalted be He, says: “O mankind, We created you from a male and a female” (Qur’an 49:13) (2), affirming that she is man’s equal partner at the very origin of human existence. She is likewise his partner in reward and punishment for deeds: “Whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while he is a believer—We shall most certainly grant such people a good life, and We shall most certainly reward them according to the best of what they used to do” (Qur’an 16:97) (3).
