Rulings Concerning the Menstruating Woman
3 – Rulings concerning the menstruating woman:
A – Vaginal intercourse with her is forbidden during menstruation, for the Exalted says, “They ask you about menstruation. Say, ‘It is an ailment; so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are purified. When they have purified themselves, go to them as Allah has commanded you. Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves’” (Al-Baqarah 2:222). ⦗1⦘
This prohibition remains in force until the bleeding ceases and she bathes, as He also says: “Do not approach them until they are purified; and when they have purified themselves, then go to them as Allah has commanded you” (Al-Baqarah 2:222).
The husband, however, may enjoy every form of intimacy short of vaginal intercourse, because the Prophet ﷺ said, “Do everything except intercourse.” ⦗2⦘
B – During her period a woman refrains from both fasting and prayer; performing either is forbidden and would not be valid. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Is it not the case that when a woman menstruates she neither prays nor fasts?” Agreed upon.
When the bleeding ends she must make up the missed fasts but not the prayers, as ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “We used to menstruate during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we were instructed to make up the fasts but were not instructed to make up the prayers.” Agreed upon.
