—for any part of it, for this is nams (the plucking of the eyebrows), and the Prophet ﷺ cursed whoever practices it. He ﷺ said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the nāmiṣah (the woman who plucks her eyebrows) and the mutanammisah (the one for whom it is done).” The nāmiṣah is she who removes all or part of her eyebrow hair under the pretext of beautification, and the mutanammisah is the one who allows it to be done for her. Such conduct constitutes an alteration of Allah’s creation—the very thing Satan swore he would command the children of Adam to do, as Allah relates: “I will surely command them, and they will surely alter Allah’s creation” (Q 4:119). In the authentic collections it is reported from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said, “Allah has cursed the wāshimāt and mustawshimāt (women who tattoo and those who are tattooed), the nāmiṣāt and mutanammisāt (women who pluck eyebrows and those who have them plucked), and the mutafallijāt for beauty (those who file their teeth to look attractive)—all of them are altering Allah’s creation.” He then added, “Why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed, when his command is found in the Book of Allah?”—alluding to the verse, “So accept whatever the Messenger gives you and abstain from whatever he forbids you” (Q 59:7). Ibn Kathīr records this in his Tafsīr (2/359, Dār al-Andalus edition).
Many women today have been afflicted by this grave sin—one of the major offenses—until eyebrow-plucking has come to be regarded as a daily necessity. A woman is not permitted to obey her husband if he orders her to do it, for such obedience would be disobedience to Allah.
