Accordingly, a woman should keep the hair of her head, look after it, and braid it into plaits. She is not permitted to gather it on the top of her head or at the back of her neck.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (22/145): “This is what some prostitutes aim for when they braid their hair into a single plait that hangs between the shoulders.”
Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm, former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia (may Allah have mercy on him), said: “What some Muslim women do nowadays—parting the hair to one side, gathering it at the nape, or arranging it on the crown as European women do—is not permissible, for it constitutes imitation of the women of the unbelievers.”
Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported in a lengthy hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Two categories of the people of Hell I have not yet seen: people who carry whips like the tails of cattle and lash others with them, and women who are clothed yet naked, swaying and causing others to sway, with heads like the leaning humps of Bactrian camels. They will neither enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance, though its fragrance can surely be detected from a distance of such-and-such.”⦗2⦘
