- Combining the prayers because of deep mud (1) or a biting, icy wind is likewise permitted. This is supported by the report from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās, who told his muʾadhdhin (caller to prayer) on a rainy day: “When you have said, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,’ do not say, ‘Come to prayer.’ Instead, say, ‘Pray in your homes.’” The people seemed taken aback, so he said, “Are you surprised at this? Someone better than I has done it before. The Friday prayer is a binding obligation (2), yet I disliked putting you to hardship, making you walk through mud and slippery ground.”
In another wording: “The muʾadhdhin of Ibn ʿAbbās gave the call to prayer on a rainy Friday … and said, ‘I disliked that you should have to walk on the slick, treacherous ground (3).’” (4)
(1) Al-wahl: fine, moisture-soaked mud—the terms wahl, dahd, zalal, zalq, and radgh are synonymous. Some authorities say it is the rain that merely moistens the surface of the ground. See: Sharh al-Nawawi ‘ala Sahih Muslim, 5/215; Hashiyat al-Rawd al-Murbi by Ibn Qasim, 2/403.
(2) “Al-jumu‘ah ‘azmah” means that the Friday prayer is categorically obligatory. Sharh al-Nawawi ‘ala Sahih Muslim, 5/244.
(3) Muslim, no. 699; the documentation has already been given under Congregational Prayer: Excuses for Missing the Congregation.
(4) In summary, it is permissible to combine two prayers in the following situations:
1. During travel that legally allows the prayers to be shortened.
2. For a sick person who would face hardship if he did not combine, and for the mustahadah (woman with continuous non-menstrual bleeding).
3. A nursing mother if washing her garment at every prayer time is difficult.
4. Rain.
5. Severe mud (dahd).
6. A strong, cold wind.
7. Any other excuse that lawfully permits one to forgo Jumu‘ah or the congregational prayer.

Combining prayers without a valid excuse is considered a major sin; see Majmu‘ Fatawa Ibn Taymiyyah, 24/84; 22/31, 53, 54.
