Salat al-Musafir - al-Safar wa Ahkamuhu fi Daw al-Kitab wa al-SunnahSa’id Ibn Wahf al-Qahtani

while he is encamped when the time of the earlier prayer begins, he should bring the later prayer forward and perform it together with the earlier one; whereas if, when the time of the earlier prayer comes in, he is still on the move, the better course is to delay the earlier prayer until the time of the later one.” (1) And Allah, the Exalted, knows best. 5 – Combining the prayers for a sick person who would suffer hardship and weakness were he not to do so is permissible, on the strength of the ḥadith of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ …”

(1) Al-Nawawi, Commentary on Sahih Muslim, 4:468. (2) Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin summarizes the jurists’ disagreement about a traveller’s combining the prayers while on the road or while encamped: a) One view says a traveller may combine only when actually moving, not when halted, and its proponents cite several evidences. b) The second view permits combining whether the traveller is stationary or moving, on the basis of: 1. The Prophet combined the prayers during the Tabuk expedition while camped. 2. The hadith of Abu Juhayfa in the two Sahihs shows that during the Farewell Pilgrimage the Prophet was encamped at al-Abtah when he prayed two rakʿas each for Dhuhr and ʿAsr. 3. The general wording of Ibn ʿAbbas’s report: “He combined Dhuhr with ʿAsr and Maghrib with ʿIsha in Madinah without fear or travel.” 4. If combining is allowed because of rain and similar excuses, it is even more fitting during travel. 5. A traveller often finds it difficult to pray every salah at its fixed time—because of fatigue, lack of water, and the like. He concludes: “The correct opinion is that combining the prayers is permissible for the traveller; for one who is actually on the move it is recommended, while for one who is encamped it is merely permissible but not recommended—if he combines there is no harm, yet leaving it is better.” See al-Sharh al-mumtiʿ, 4:550–553.
