Our venerable Shaykh, Imām ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bāz (may Allah have mercy on him), said: “In the case of advance combination, it is obligatory to observe uninterrupted succession between the two prayers, although a brief pause that people customarily regard as slight is acceptable, for this is established from the Prophet (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, ‘Pray as you have seen me pray.’ (1) As for delayed combination, the matter is less restricted, since the second prayer is performed in its own time; nevertheless, it is preferable to maintain succession between them, emulating the Prophet (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). Allah is the One who grants success.” (2) And Allah knows best. (3)

(3) Ibn ʿUthaymin writes: “Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya held that uninterrupted succession (muwalat) between the two prayers that are combined is not a prerequisite. He explained that jamʿ (combining) simply means joining the times—i.e., attaching the time of the second prayer to that of the first so that both times become a single period.… Shaykh al-Islam cited several statements from Imam Ahmad supporting the view that succession is no more required in a combination by advance than it is in a combination by delay. Although it is safer not to combine when the prayers are not performed consecutively, Shaykh al-Islam’s position is strong.” Al-Sharh al-Mumtiʿ, 4/568–569.
There are three opinions:
• First: succession is not required in either an advance combination or a delayed combination; this is the view of Ibn Taymiyya.
• Second: succession is required in both types, on the grounds that jamʿ entails physical joining; this is the opinion of some scholars.
• Third: succession is required in an advance combination but not in a delayed one; this is the well-known position in the Hanbali school. See Ibn ʿUthaymin, Al-Sharh al-Mumtiʿ, 4/578.
