Twelfth: It is valid for a resident to pray behind a traveller, and once the traveller ends the prayer with the salām, the resident must stand and complete the remaining units. This ruling is established by the relevant reports ⦗1⦘ and by scholarly consensus. Ibn Qudāmah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: “The scholars are unanimously agreed that when a resident follows a traveller in prayer and the traveller concludes after two rakʿahs, the resident is obliged to complete the prayer.” ⦗2⦘ It is also narrated from ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, that whenever he arrived in Mecca he would lead them in two rakʿahs and then
(1) It is narrated from Imran—may Allah be pleased with him—in a marfuʿ report: “The Prophet stayed in Mecca at the time of the Conquest for eighteen nights, leading the people in two-rakʿa prayers, except Maghrib. He would then say, ‘People of Mecca, stand and perform two more rakʿas, for we are travellers.’” Related by Ahmad, 4/430. Abu Dawud records it in the Book of the Traveller’s Prayer, chapter “When the traveller completes the prayer,” no. 1229, with the wording: “People of the town, pray four, for we are a travelling folk.” The chain contains ʿAli b. Zayd b. Judʿan, who is weak. Al-Shawkani comments: “Al-Tirmidhi deemed the hadith (no. 545) hasan only because of its supporting narrations” (Nayl al-Awtar, 2/402).

الثاني عشر: صلاة المقيم خلف المسافر صحيحة ويتمُّ المقيم بعد سلام المسافر؛ للآثار في ذلك (١)،والإجماع، قال ابن قدامة ﵀: ((أجمع أهل العلم على أن المقيم إذا ائتمّ بالمسافر، وسلم المسافر من ركعتين أن على المقيم إتمام الصلاة)) (٢). وعن عمر ﵁ أنه كان إذا قدم مكة صلى بهم ركعتين ثم
