—counting the nights as well—just as Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) affirmed. (1)
Haritha ibn Wahb al-Khuzaʿī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Mina when the people were more numerous than they had ever been, and during the Farewell Pilgrimage he led us in a two-rakʿah prayer.” (2) Such is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; it must therefore be put into practice and followed. Tenth: The permissibility of offering voluntary prayers while mounted during travel.
It is valid to perform supererogatory prayers while on one’s mount during a journey, whether on a riding animal,

(2) Agreed upon: al-Bukhari, Book of Shortening the Prayer, chapter “Prayer at Mina,” no. 1083; Muslim, Book of the Prayer of Travelers, chapter “Shortening the Prayer at Mina,” no. 696.
(3) As for Uthman (radi Allah ʿanhu) completing the prayer, many explanations have been proposed; Ibn al-Qayyim lists six excuses offered on his behalf. One is that numerous Bedouins were present that year, and when some of them told him that the Prophet had prayed two rakʿahs he replied, “O Commander of the Believers, I have been praying it as two rakʿahs since I saw you do so last year.” Uthman therefore wished to teach the Bedouins that the regular prayer consists of four rakʿahs, among other reasons. Concerning Aisha (radi Allah ʿanha), it is said that she regarded shortening as a concession (rukhsah) and that completing the prayer is superior for whoever finds no hardship in it. ʿUrwah narrates from his father that she would pray four rakʿahs while travelling. When he said to her, “Would that you prayed two,” she replied, “Nephew, it is not hard for me.” Reported by al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-kubra, 3:143; Ibn Hajar judges its chain sound in Fath al-Bari, 2:571. For further discussion of the excuses offered for Uthman and for Aisha, see Ibn al-Qayyim, Zad al-Maʿad, 1:465-472; and Ibn Hajar, Fath al-Bari, 2:570-571.
