and al-Bukhārī — may Allah have mercy on him — said: “The Prophet ﷺ regarded a day and a night as a journey.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar — may Allah have mercy on him — commented: “What he means is that the Prophet called the span of one day and one night a journey, as though he were alluding to the hadith of Abū Hurayrah that he cited in this chapter.” ⦗1⦘
I say: that hadith is the Prophet’s ﷺ statement, “It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel the distance of a day and a night unless she is accompanied by a mahram (a close male relative whom she may never marry).” ⦗2⦘
In another wording recorded by Muslim: “It is not lawful for a Muslim woman to travel the distance of a single night unless a man who is her mahram is with her.” A further wording reads: “It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel the distance of a day except with a mahram.”
Ibn ʿUmar — may Allah be pleased with them both — related that the Prophet ﷺ said: “A woman must not travel for three days except with a mahram,” and in another version: “A woman may not travel for three (days) unless she is accompanied by a mahram.” Muslim’s wording states: “It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel the distance of three nights unless a mahram accompanies her.” ⦗3⦘
