and thus he is no idolater. In other words, the servant must surrender himself to Allah, Lord of all realms, as Allah the Exalted says:
“Who would turn away from the way of Abraham except one who fools himself? We certainly chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous. When his Lord said to him, ‘Submit,’ he replied, ‘I have submitted to the Lord of all realms.’ Abraham enjoined the same upon his children, and so did Jacob: ‘My children, Allah has chosen this religion for you, so do not die except in a state of Islam.’” (Surah al-Baqarah, 130–132)
He, the Exalted, also says:
“Say: My Lord has guided me to a straight path—a perfectly upright religion—the way of Abraham, sincere in faith; he was not one of the polytheists. Say: My prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all realms; He has no partner. This is what I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit.” (Surah al-An‘ām, 161–163)
The verb “aslama” (to submit) is likewise used intransitively with the preposition “li” (to), as in the verses just cited, and in His words:
“Turn to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you, then you will not be helped.” (Surah az-Zumar, 54)
and in the words of the Queen:
“She said, ‘My Lord, I have surely wronged myself, and I now submit, together with Solomon, to Allah, Lord of all realms.’” (Surah an-Naml, 44)
and in His words:
“Do they seek a religion other than Allah’s, while everything in the heavens and on earth submits to Him—willingly or unwillingly—and to Him they will be returned?” (Surah Āl ʿImrān, 83)
and in His words:
“Say: Shall we call on, instead of Allah, that which can neither benefit us nor harm us, and turn back on our heels after Allah has guided us—like one whom the devils have lured away, bewildered on the earth—though he has companions calling him to guidance: ‘Come to us’? Say: The guidance of Allah is the true guidance, and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all realms, and to establish prayer and be mindful of Him.” (Surah al-An‘ām, 71–72)
