Kitāb al-TawḥīdSalih Al-Fawzan

and His signs. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever hangs something on himself will be left to it.” (1) That is, Allah hands the person over to whatever he has attached himself to. Thus, whoever clings to Allah, seeks refuge in Him, and entrusts his affairs to Him, Allah will suffice him, bring near what is distant, and make every hardship easy. But whoever attaches himself to anything else—created beings, amulets, medicines, or graves—Allah will abandon him to that powerless thing, which can neither harm nor benefit him. He thereby forfeits his creed, severs his bond with his Lord, and is forsaken by Allah.

A Muslim is duty-bound to safeguard his faith from anything that could spoil or undermine it. He must not resort to unlawful medicines, nor should he seek treatment from charlatans and sorcerers, for they disease his heart and his creed. Whoever relies upon Allah, Allah will suffice him.

Some people even hang such objects on themselves when they suffer from no physical illness at all; their ailment is imaginary—it is fear.

(1) Reported by Ahmad (Musnad) and al-Tirmidhi (Sunan).
