Tiwalah is a charm that people place, claiming it makes a wife more beloved to her husband, or a husband to his wife.
This view—that it is forbidden—is the correct one for three reasons:
- The prohibition is general and nothing qualifies or restricts that generality.
- It is a preventive measure (sadd al-dharīʿah), for it opens the door to hanging objects that are not lawful.
- If someone hangs something from the Quran, he will inevitably demean it by carrying it while relieving himself, cleaning himself, and the like.⦗1⦘
The second category of amulets are those hung on people that are not taken from the Quran—such as beads, bones, cowrie shells, strings, sandals, nails, the names of devils and jinn, and occult symbols. These are unequivocally forbidden and constitute shirk, for they attach one’s heart to something other than Allah, exalted is He, and other than His names and attributes.
