[Chapter Two: Magic, Soothsaying, and Fortune-Telling]
Magic, soothsaying, and fortune-telling are all satanic practices that are strictly forbidden. They undermine—indeed, they contradict—sound belief, for they can only be carried out through polytheistic means.
- Magic (sihr): this term denotes something whose cause is hidden and subtle. It is called sihr because it operates through imperceptible means that the eye cannot detect. In practice it involves charms, incantations, spoken formulas, concocted potions, and smoke-based rites. It is real: certain forms of it affect hearts and bodies, causing illness, death, or estrangement between a man and his wife. Its influence occurs only by Allah’s universal decree, yet it remains a diabolical craft, and most of it can be achieved only through shirk—drawing near to malevolent spirits with what pleases them and seeking to employ them by worshipping them. For that reason the Lawgiver paired it with polytheism, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Avoid the seven destructive sins.” They asked, “What are they, Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Associating partners with Allah, and magic…” (1) Hence, magic falls under the heading of shirk from two vantage points:

السحر والكهانة والعرافة كل هذه الأمور أعمال شيطانية محرمة. تخل بالعقيدة أو تناقضها لأنها لا تحصل إلا بأمور شركية.
١ - فالسحر: عبارة عما خفي ولطف سببه:
سمي سحرا، لأنه يحصل بأمور خفية لا تدرك بالأبصار - وهو عزائم ورقى وكلام يتكلم به وأدوية وتدخينات. وله حقيقة. ومنه ما يؤثر في القلوب والأبدان فيمرض ويقتل ويفرق بين المرء وزوجه وتأثيره بإذن الله الكوني القدري - وهو عمل شيطاني - وكثير منه لا يتوصل إليه إلا بالشرك والتقرب إلى الأرواح الخبيثة بما تحب والتوصل إلى استخدامها بالإشراك بها - ولهذا قرنه الشارع بالشرك حيث يقول النبي ﷺ: «اجتنبوا السبع الموبقات. قالوا: وما هي؟ قال: الإشراك بالله والسحر» (١) الحديث. فهو داخل في الشرك من ناحيتين:
