This hypocrisy falls into six categories (1):
- Denying the Messenger ﷺ.
- Denying part of what the Messenger ﷺ brought.
- Hating the Messenger ﷺ.
- Hating part of what the Messenger ﷺ brought.
- Rejoicing at the decline of the Messenger’s religion.
- Resenting the triumph of the Messenger’s religion.
The second type is practical hypocrisy: performing any deed characteristic of hypocrites while faith still remains in the heart. This does not expel a person from the religion, but it is a pathway that leads toward that end. A person may possess both faith and hypocrisy, and he will receive reward or punishment in proportion to whichever of the two prevails within him. If these hypocritical traits multiply, they render him a pure hypocrite. The proof is the Prophet’s ﷺ saying: “Four traits—whoever possesses them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has a trait of hypocrisy until he leaves it: when he is entrusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he pledges, he breaks his promise; and when he disputes, he transgresses.” (2)
