others. Nor did they visit any shrine erected over a relic ascribed to a prophet. Moreover, the place in Madinah where the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—regularly prayed was never touched or kissed by the early generations, nor were the spots in Makkah and elsewhere where he had performed the prayer. If even the ground his noble feet trod and on which he prayed was not legislated for his community to rub against or kiss, how much less justified is it to do so at a place merely alleged to have been prayed upon or slept upon by someone else. Scholars know—by the undeniable necessities of the religion of Islam—that kissing such objects or rubbing oneself against them is not part of his law, peace and blessings be upon him. (1)
- Innovations in acts of worship and drawing near to Allah: The innovations that have appeared in the realm of worship in our times are many; and the fundamental rule concerning worship is that it is restricted—nothing is legislated except with evidence.
