Chapter Four addresses the subject of innovations and contains the following sections:

Section One: The definition of innovation—its categories and the legal rulings pertaining to each.
Section Two: The appearance of innovations in Muslim life and the factors that gave rise to them.
Section Three: The stance of the Muslim ummah toward those who introduce innovations, and the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah in refuting them.
Section Four: A discussion of select contemporary innovations, namely:
1 – Celebrating the Prophet’s birthday.
2 – Seeking blessing through places, relics, the deceased, and similar practices.
3 – Innovations in acts of worship and in seeking closeness to Allah.
