nothing against Allah at all.’ (1)
The Prophet ﷺ also said, “If a person’s deeds are slow to carry him forward, his lineage will not hasten him along.” (2)
Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah repudiate the way of the Rawāfiḍ, who exaggerate concerning certain members of the Prophet’s Household and claim for them infallibility; the way of the Nawāṣib, who harbor hostility toward the upright members of the Household and malign them; and the way of the innovators and devotees of superstition who seek the Household’s intercession and turn them into lords besides Allah.
In this, as in all matters, the people of the Sunnah tread the middle course—the straight path that allows neither excess nor neglect, neither harshness nor exaggeration toward the Household or anyone else. The upright members of the Household themselves condemn all forms of extremism concerning them and disown the extremists. The Commander of the Faithful, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him), burned the extremists who deified him, and Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him) concurred with killing them, though he preferred execution by the sword rather than by fire. ʿAlī also sought out ʿAbd Allāh ibn Sabāʾ, the leader of the extremists, in order to put him to death, but he escaped and went into hiding.
