[Preface to the Book of Tawḥīd]
In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
Preface
All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds, and may blessings and peace be upon His truthful and trustworthy Prophet, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
To proceed:
This is a book on the science of tawḥīd (Islamic monotheism). I have tried to keep it brief and easy to read, drawing on numerous sources from the works of our eminent scholars—most notably the writings of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, the scholar Ibn al-Qayyim, and Shaykh al-Islam Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb and his students, the imams of the blessed reform movement.
There is no doubt that the study of Islamic creed is the fundamental science to which the greatest care must be given in learning, teaching, and practice. Only through it are deeds sound, accepted by Allah, and beneficial to those who perform them—especially in an age overrun by deviant currents: the current of atheism; the current of Sufism and monasticism; the current of pagan grave-worship; and the current of opposing innovations.
