with perfect decorum, modesty, and respect, and the same comportment was observed in graveyards and when following a funeral procession).
34 – Eating and drinking on occasion. This is based on the ḥadith of ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Juzʾ al-Zubaydī (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: “We were one day with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the Suffah when food was set before us, so we ate. The prayer was then called, so we rose and prayed without renewing ablution.” In another wording he said: “During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to eat bread and meat in the mosque.”
Aḥmad recorded the report, as did his son ʿAbd Allāh, who said: “My father narrated it to me; Hārūn narrated to us”—Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: “and I myself heard it from Hārūn”—“who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us; Ḥaywah ibn Shurayḥ informed me; ʿUqbah ibn Muslim informed me,” with the first wording.
This chain is sound; its transmitters are trustworthy—men cited in Muslim—except for ʿUqbah, and he too is reliable.
As for the other wording, it was produced by Ibn Mājah, who said: “Yaʿqūb ibn Ḥumayd ibn Kāsib and Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā both narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb related to us; ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith informed me; Sulaymān ibn Ziyād al-Ḥaḍramī narrated to me that he heard it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith.” In al-Zawāʾid it is stated: “Its chain is sound (ḥasan); its transmitters are reliable, though Yaʿqūb is a point of dispute.”
I add: The criticism levelled at him concerns his retention, yet in this narration he is corroborated by Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā, who is trustworthy. Accordingly, the ḥadith is authentic by way of Ibn Wahb and the remaining narrators.
