but he is a mudallis who transmits with an ʿanʿana; nevertheless, al-Nawawī said in al-Majmūʿ: “Its chain is good.”
Al-Mundhirī states in his Mukhtaṣar:
“Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said, ‘We know of no narration of this ḥadith from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr except through this chain,’ and he added that it has also been transmitted in a mursal form.”
I say: that mursal version lends support to the connected one. He then said:
“It was also recorded by Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ and by al-Nasāʾī in his Sunan, through Abū Ḥāzim Salmān al-Ashjaʿī from Abū Hurayrah, with wording similar to it but fuller.”
I say: the report in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim is as al-Mundhirī described, but it does not specify that the charity was given inside the mosque; the wording is unrestricted. As for al-Nasāʾī, I did not find it in his Minor Sunan, nor does al-Nābulusī cite it in al-Dhakhāʾir; it therefore appears to be in his Major Sunan.
Al-Suyūṭī, in his epistle Badhl al-ʿAsjad li-Suʾāl al-Masjid within his al-Ḥāwī, after quoting al-Mundhirī, said:
“I say: it was recorded—and al-Bukhārī also recorded it in Aḥkām al-Masājid according to al-Zarkashī.”
This is how it appears in the original manuscript, though the phrasing is clearly muddled; in any case, the ḥadith is not found in al-Bukhārī. Allah knows best.
In the same chapter there is a report from Ibn ʿAbbās who said:
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to the mosque while the people were praying—some bowing, some prostrating, others standing or sitting—and a poor man was asking. The Messenger of Allah entered and said, ‘Has anyone given you anything?’”
