—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
In another wording from him it says:
“In the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ we used to sleep in the mosque—and even take our siesta there—while we were young men.”
This ḥadith is authentic and agreed upon, and it reaches us from Ibn ʿUmar through two independent routes:
First: ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿUmar said, “Nāfiʿ related to me, saying: ʿAbdullāh narrated it to me.” Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, al-Nasāʾī, al-Dārimī, Ibn Mājah, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad all transmit the report through various chains from him. The second wording quoted above is that of Aḥmad, and likewise that of Ibn Mājah, except that Ibn Mājah does not include the phrase, “and we would take our siesta …” and the like.
ʿUbaydullāh ibn ʿUmar—the diminutive form—was supported by al-ʿUmrī, namely ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar in the augmented form, who is his brother; Aḥmad recorded this supporting transmission.
Second: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us: Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar with similar wording. Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and Aḥmad all recorded it. Al-Tirmidhī’s version matches the second wording except that he omits the phrase, “and we would take our siesta in it,” and he commented, “A sound, authentic ḥadith.”
