This ḥadith reaches us through Abu Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—by two separate routes:
-
The first chain runs: Shuʿbah → Muḥammad ibn Ziyād, who said, “I heard Abu Hurayrah say …,” and he related the incident in full. It is recorded by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and al-Dāraquṭnī.
-
The second chain runs: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr → Abu Salamah → Abu Hurayrah, with wording similar to the previous narration but in abridged form. It is reported by al-Bayhaqī.
This isnād is ḥasan (sound).
The same story is also transmitted from several other Companions besides Abu Hurayrah:
• Abu al-Dardāʾ, as related by Muslim, al-Nasāʾī, and al-Bayhaqī;
• Jābir ibn Samurah, as related by al-Dāraquṭnī, Aḥmad, and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr—its chain is authentic according to the criteria of Muslim;
• and Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī.
