Ibn ʿAjlān likewise corroborated Saʿid’s report with a similar wording, but he added at the end:
“ʿUmar said, ‘By Allah, a moment ago he was, in my eyes, smaller than a pig, yet now he is greater in my eyes than a mountain. Release him.’ Thumamah thereupon returned to al-Yamamah and withheld supplies from them. They clamoured and grew distressed, and wrote: ‘You are the one who enjoins the keeping of kinship ties!’ He (the narrator) said: The Prophet then wrote to him.”
Ahmad recorded the tradition in this form, and its chain is sound (ḥasan).
Ahmad also cited an abridged version, transmitted through ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar from Saʿid al-Maqburi:
“Thumamah ibn Uthal al-Ḥanafi embraced Islam, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered that he be taken to the garden of Abū Ṭalḥah to bathe. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, ‘Your companion’s Islam has become excellent.’”
This isnād, however, is weak, for the ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar in question—the elder al-ʿUmari—is unreliable in memory, and in this ḥadīth he has reported an addition not supported by the trustworthy narrators.
(b) Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim said: “I came to Medina to arrange the ransom for the captives of Badr”—in another recension: “to ransom the idolaters.” He was still an idolater at the time. “I entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was performing the Maghrib prayer, and he was reciting Sūrat al-Ṭūr. When he reached the verse, ‘Were they created out of nothing, or were they themselves the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are uncertain. Or do they possess the treasures…’”
