through the mosque so that they could pray over him. They did so, and the bier was halted at the wives’ apartments, where they performed the funeral prayer for him—he was then taken out through the Funeral Gate that opened onto the Maqāʿid. Word reached them that some people were finding fault with this, saying, “Funerals were never brought into the mosque.” When that reached ʿĀʾishah she said, “How quickly people rush to criticize what they do not understand! They reproach us because a bier was carried through the mosque, even though the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself prayed…”
Both Bukhārī and Muslim transmit the report through the chain of Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, from ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Ḥamzah, from ʿAbbād. Muslim’s version contains the final addition, and al-Nasāʾī also records it through the same route.
2 – Al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn ʿUthmān, from Abū al-Naḍr, from Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from her, with the second wording. Muslim and Abū Dāwūd relate it, and Muslim’s text reads: “When Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ died she said, ‘Bring him into the mosque so that I may pray over him.’ They objected, but she said, ‘By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ …’ ”—and so on.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī also narrates the report in full, though the portion traced back to the Prophet comes with the first wording in his version.
Mālik likewise transmits it in the Muwaṭṭaʾ from Abū al-Naḍr on the authority of ʿĀʾishah, omitting Abū Salamah from the chain. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr said: “This is how it appears in the Muwaṭṭaʾ according to the majority of transmitters, with a break in the chain. Ḥammād ibn Khālid al-Khayyāṭ, however, related it from Mālik—from Abū al-Naḍr—from Abū Salamah—from ʿĀʾishah, and he alone transmits this version from Mālik.”
