The ḥadith is reported on the authority of ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and it comes through two routes:
-
ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr from her.
Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, al-Ṭaḥāwī, and Aḥmad all transmit it through various chains from him, and the first two additional phrases appear in all of their versions except that of al-Tirmidhī.Muslim and Aḥmad add a wording that clarifies why ʿĀʾishah narrated the report, namely:
“ʿĀʾishah ordered that the bier of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ be carried through the mosque so that she could perform the funeral prayer over him; the people objected to this, whereupon she said, ‘How quickly people forget! The Messenger…’ ”—and so on.Al-Ṭaḥāwī also records the ḥadith, and Aḥmad includes the additional phrase: “So they passed it by her,” while another wording states: “They made their way with it through the mosque, and she supplicated for him.”
In another of his narrations—likewise found in Muslim, whose wording follows—it is related from ʿĀʾishah that when Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ died, the wives of the Prophet ﷺ sent word that his bier be carried past them
