The second account describes the Prophet ﷺ stepping down from the pulpit when he saw al-Hasan and his brother al-Ḥusayn stumbling in their shirts; it will, Allah willing, be mentioned under the Friday sermon.
(c) Anas reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would hear a child crying with his mother while he was in prayer, so he would recite a brief or very short surah.”
This was recorded by Muslim, al-Dāraqutnī, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad through the chain of Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān, from Thābit al-Bunnī, from him.
The Prophet ﷺ confirmed this by saying:
(d) He ﷺ said:
“I enter the prayer intending to prolong it, but when I hear a child crying I shorten it, out of compassion for the distress his mother feels for him.”
This too is from the narration of Anas. It was related by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, Ibn Mājah, al-Bayhaqī, and Aḥmad through several chains from Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah, who said: Qatādah narrated it to us from him.
It has a corroborating report from Abū Qatādah recorded by al-Bukhārī and others, which will perhaps be cited later.
The ḥāfiẓ said:
