—“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the courtyard of this mosque and called out at the top of his voice:
‘The mosque is not lawful for one in a state of major ritual impurity, nor for a menstruating woman.’”
Ibn Mājah and Ibn Abī Ḥātim recorded it in al-ʿIlal, both through the route of Abū Nuʿaym, who said: Ibn Abī Ghaniyyah narrated to us from Abū al-Khaṭṭāb al-Hijrī from Maḥdūj, with this wording. Al-ʿIlal adds: “except for the Prophet, his wives, ʿAlī, and Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad.”
Al-Zawāʾid comments: “Its chain is weak: Maḥdūj has not been deemed reliable, and Abū al-Khaṭṭāb is unknown.”
Ibn Ḥazm said the same regarding Abū al-Khaṭṭāb, and of Maḥdūj he remarked: “He is worthless; he narrates problematic reports from Jasrah.”
Ibn Abī Ḥātim then relates: “Abū Zurʿah said: They report it as ‘from Jasrah, from Umm Salamah,’ whereas the correct chain is ‘from ʿĀʾishah.’” This indicates that Maḥdūj was not the sole transmitter. Indeed, Ibn Ḥazm states: “We have transmitted it through ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, from ʿAtāʾ al-Khuffāf, from Ibn Abī Ghaniyyah, from Ismāʿīl, from Jasrah bint Dajājah, from Umm Salamah—with the additional wording.” Ibn Ḥazm, however, rejects it, saying: “ʿAtāʾ al-Khuffāf is ʿAtāʾ ibn Muslim—his ḥadith are repudiated—and Ismāʿīl is unknown.”
I add: This is how it appears in al-Muḥallā: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb from ʿAtāʾ al-Khuffāf.” In the margin of the Yemeni manuscript it reads: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAtāʾ al-Khuffāf,” and that is an error.
