Women may enter the mosque only under two conditions:
-
They must go out neither perfumed nor conspicuously adorned, for the Prophet ﷺ said, “When any one of you women attends the mosque—in another wording: attends the night prayer—let her not apply fragrance.”
• This ḥadith is narrated by Zaynab al-Thaqafiyyah, the wife of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, and is recorded by Muslim, al-Nasāʾī, Abū ʿAwānah, and Aḥmad.
• The second wording comes in Aḥmad through the route of Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān, who said: “Bukayr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ashajj related to me from Busr b. Saʿīd, from her.” This chain is sound (ḥasan).
• Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Hishām corroborated it from Bakr with the same wording; Aḥmad, al-Ṭayālisī, and likewise al-Nasāʾī transmit it, while al-Layth b. Saʿd supports it there with the first wording.
• Muslim also records it through Mukhramah, from his father, from Busr b. Saʿīd. Further supporting narrations from Abū Hurayrah and others will follow. -
They must first seek their husbands’ permission, and the husbands are obliged to grant it, because the Prophet ﷺ said, “Do not bar your womenfolk from the mosques [at night] when they ask your leave to go, [but let them go out plain and unadorned]; [their homes, however, are better for them].”
