Al-Thamar al-MustatabNasir al-Din al-Albani

“It was reported by al-Ṭabarānī in al-Kabīr with a good chain of transmission whose narrators are trustworthy,” as stated in al-Majmaʿ.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever spits toward the qiblah will come on the Day of Resurrection with his spittle between his eyes.”

This ḥadith is narrated by Ḥudhayfah ibn al-Yamān. Abū Dāwūd and others recorded it with a sound isnād, and it includes the additional wording: “Whoever eats from this foul-smelling plant should not come near our mosque for three days.” Discussion of this addition has already passed.

The report is further supported by a narration from Ibn ʿUmar, traced back to the Prophet, in the wording: “The one who hawks up phlegm toward the qiblah will be raised on the Day of Resurrection while it is upon his face.”

Al-Bazzār, Ibn Khuzaymah in his Ṣaḥīḥ—this is his wording—and Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ recorded it, as cited in al-Targhīb. In the isnād preserved by al-Bazzār appears ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar; al-Bukhārī and several others judged him weak, whereas Ibn Ḥibbān included him among the reliable narrators in al-Thiqat, as noted in al-Majmaʿ.

On its face, this ḥadith indicates the reprehensibility of spitting toward the qiblah both during and outside the prayer, for the text does not restrict the ruling to the state of prayer. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said:

“Al-Nawawī ruled unequivocally that it is forbidden in every circumstance—inside and outside the prayer, whether in the mosque or elsewhere. He also transmitted from Mālik that he saw no harm in it, meaning outside the prayer. Supporting the prohibition is what ʿAbd al-Razzāq and others narrated from Ibn Masʿūd, that he disliked [to…]”
