Likewise, Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah is not among Muslim’s transmitters, even though he is reliable, and Muslim only cites Ibn Isḥāq when his narration is paired with that of another narrator. In short, the chain of this ḥadith is sound (ḥasan), and al-Ḥāfiẓ [Ibn Ḥajar] passed over it in silence in Fath al-Bārī.
(10) Spitting—especially toward the qiblah or to one’s right—is forbidden. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once saw sputum on the qiblah wall; he scraped it off, then faced the people in anger and said:
“When any one of you is praying, let him not spit in front of him, for Allah is before his face while he is praying.”
The ḥadith is narrated by Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them). Al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and al-Nasāʾī record it through the route of Mālik, and it is found in the Muwaṭṭaʾ as well as in the collections of al-Dārimī, Ibn Mājah, al-Ṭayālisī, and Aḥmad through several chains. Al-Bayhaqī also transmits it. The additional wording is supplied by al-Bukhārī, Abū Dāwūd, al-Dārimī, and Aḥmad, who relate that the Prophet said:
“Nor to his right,” after which he called for a twig and scraped it off, then asked for a perfumed clay and applied it to the spot.
This passage has been cited earlier, and it is corroborated by a narration from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him).
