In the first of the two transmissions just mentioned the third supplementary phrase appears, while the second wording is found in the other. The first version also reads, “until he returns to it,” in place of “when he departs from it until he comes back to it.”
Al-Bayhaqī relates the ḥadith in al-Asmāʾ wa-l-Ṣifāt through the chain of Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Layth—ʿUmar ibn Marzūq narrated to us; Shuʿbah from Khubayb—with several verbal and semantic differences in some clauses; his text includes the phrase, “under His Throne.”
Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Layth is weak, yet he is not the only transmitter who cites the mention of the Throne. Al-Bayhaqī says, “The word ‘Throne’ is reported in the marfūʿ ḥadith,” then quotes this narration and adds, “It is likewise transmitted from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn Ḥafṣ, from Khubayb, and from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Hurayrah.”
I add: I have located a third line of transmission from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Khaṭīb records it through ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir al-Aslamī, from Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, from his father, from him, traced back to the Prophet with the wording, “under the shade of His Throne.” ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir al-Aslamī is weak.
The same chain is also cited by al-Bayhaqī in al-Shuʿab, as noted in Fatḥ al-Bārī, though he does not quote its wording. He then remarks, “ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĀmir is weak, but he is not to be abandoned altogether; his ḥadith is acceptable as corroborative evidence.”
