Al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, al-Ṭaḥāwī, and Aḥmad have also transmitted it through several lines of transmission from him, and some of Aḥmad’s isnāds contain only three narrators between him and the Prophet.
Shuʿbah likewise related it from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, who said: “I heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while delivering the sermon, declared:
‘When one of you arrives and the imam is preaching—or has already come out—let him pray two rakʿahs.’”
It is recorded by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, al-Nasāʾī, al-Dārimī, al-Ṭaḥāwī, al-Ṭayālisī, Aḥmad, and al-Dāraquṭnī. (1)
3 – Al-Layth reports from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, in wording similar to that of ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, but he identifies the man as Sulayk and includes the earlier additional phrase. Muslim, as well as al-Ṭaḥāwī, record this version.
Yazīd ibn Ibrāhīm corroborated Al-Layth’s report from Abū al-Zubayr; al-Ṭaḥāwī and Aḥmad transmit his narration, which adds: “He said—he said—and Jābir used to maintain that if a man had already prayed in his home, he still preferred that, upon entering (the mosque), he perform those two rakʿahs.”
(2) Among the transmitters is Sulayk himself: Hishām ibn Ḥassān narrates from al-Ḥasan, from Sulayk, that he came while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was addressing the congregation.
