With the first of the two—namely al-Bukhārī—it is recorded with a sound chain that meets the criteria of both Shaykhs. Fulayḥ ibn Sulaymān narrates it in al-Dārimī; ʿUthmān ibn Abī Sulaymān and Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān in al-Ṭaḥāwī and Aḥmad (5/296 and 305); and Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Anṣārī in al-Ṭabarānī’s al-Ṣaghīr (p. 76), likewise in the second wording. All of them report: from ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿAmr ibn Sulaym, from Abū Qatādah.
Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ, however, diverged and said: from ʿĀmir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿAmr ibn Sulaym al-Zurqī, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, traced back to the Prophet ﷺ.
Al-Ṭaḥāwī and al-Khaṭīb (3/47) recorded this version and commented: “This is a mistake; Suhayl has contradicted the other transmitters in his narration, and the correct chain is: from Abū Qatādah.” Al-Tirmidhī mentioned the same and cited it from Ibn al-Madīnī.
I say: The ḥadith of Jābir concerns only the prayer performed in the mosque upon returning from a journey, as will be discussed, Allah willing.
ʿĀmir was also corroborated by Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā ibn Ḥibbān, who narrated from ʿAmr ibn Sulaym ibn Khulda al-Anṣārī, from Abū Qatādah, who said: “I entered the mosque …” — the ḥadith, which will appear in the main text.
Muslim and Aḥmad recorded it with the second wording, and it preserves the valuable information about the occasion for which the ḥadith was spoken—something seldom transmitted.
It further possesses another route with a different wording; after mentioning the occasion, al-Ḥāfiẓ said:
