I say: Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr, in his Tafsīr (3/293), attributed this report to Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, but that is a mistake on his part, may Allah have mercy on him.
He ﷺ would also say—as was his habitual practice—
“In the name of Allah. O Allah, send blessings and peace upon Muḥammad. O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.”
This wording has reached us through several ḥadiths.
- The first is the report of Anas, who said: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque he would say, ‘In the name of Allah. O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad,’ and when he left he would say, ‘In the name of Allah. O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad.’”
Ibn al-Sunnī recorded it in ʿAmal al-Yawm wa-l-Laylah (p. 31, no. 86) with the chain: al-Ḥasan ibn Mūsā al-Rusʿānī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn al-Haytham al-Baladī narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Baḥtarī—a righteous Baghdādī shaykh—narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas.
This isnād is ḥasan, or at least capable of being judged ḥasan.
Al-Ḥasan ibn Mūsā is Ibn Nāṣih ibn Yazīd, Abū Saʿīd al-Khuffāf. Al-Khaṭīb (7/429) said: “He came to Baghdad and narrated there from Ibn Sulaymān, Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Ḥarrānī, al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUmar ibn Shaqīq al-Balkhī, and ʿUqbah ibn Makram al-Ḍabbī. Those who transmitted from him include Muḥammad ibn Khalaf ibn Wakīʿ, Yaḥyā ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṣāʿ, Muḥammad ibn Mukhlad, and ʿUbayd Allah …”
