Muḥammad said: I do not know of al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allah having heard anything directly from any of the Prophet’s Companions ﷺ except his statement, “I was informed by someone who attended the Prophet’s sermon.” He continued, “I heard ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān say, ‘We do not know of al-Muṭṭalib hearing from any of the Prophet’s Companions ﷺ.’” ʿAbd Allah added, “ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī denied that al-Muṭṭalib ever heard from Anas.”
After citing al-Tirmidhī’s remarks, al-Munadhirī said (1/119): “Abū Zurʿah declared, ‘Al-Muṭṭalib is trustworthy; I hope he did hear from ʿĀʾishah. Even so, the chain contains ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawād, and scholars differ over his reliability.’”
I say: In al-Taqrīb it states concerning this ʿAbd al-Majīd, “Truthful, but prone to error.”
For this reason—and others—al-Ḥāfiẓ said in Fatḥ (9/70): “Its isnād is weak.”
The ḥadīth was also reported by al-Bayhaqī (2/440) through the route of Abū Dāwūd, who then commented, “Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Khuzaymah transmitted it from ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn al-Ḥakam al-Warraq.”
I say: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb is reliable.
Muḥammad ibn Yazīd al-Ādamī—himself trustworthy—narrated it with a different chain, saying, “ʿAbd al-Majīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawād told us, from Ibn Jurayj, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas.” Al-Ṭabarānī included this version in al-Ṣaghīr (p. 113), substituting al-Zuhrī for al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Allah; and al-Zuhrī did hear from Anas. Allah knows best which version is correct.
